The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a rear-drive, gull-winged coupe reminiscent of the classic 300 SL of the 1950s. Today's version packs the world's most powerful, naturally-aspirated V8 engine and a price tag near the nose-bleeding $235,000 mark. The hand-built V8, sitting front-midship under the two-metre long hood, is key to its charisma. An evolution of the 6.3-litre found in other current AMGs, this model receives a new intake system, forged pistons, a reworked valve train and free-flowing headers. Maximum horsepower is 563 at 6,800 rpm, with torque peaking at 479 lb/ft at 4,750 rpm. Though the SLS can hurry through high-speed corners, you'll head into a bend a tad off full chat just to hear the magically delicious throttle during downshifts.
